High Press System
How to coordinate a team press — triggers, lanes, rotation, and the 6-second rule.
The 4-3-3 is the ideal pressing formation — the front three press the back three while the midfield three block passing lanes into the central zone. The full-backs hold their shape to prevent switches.
The high press is not about running around frantically. It is a coordinated system where all 10 outfield players press simultaneously when a specific trigger fires. This playbook walks through every phase of executing a high press — from identifying the trigger, to the coordinated press movement, to what happens when the press is broken.
- When the opponent's goalkeeper receives the ball and has limited distribution options
- When the opponent plays a back pass under pressure — forcing the receiver to face their own goal
- When the opponent's centre-back receives with their back to play
- When the ball goes into a wide zone near the touchline — pressing from both sides simultaneously
- In the first 15 minutes of a half when the opponent is still organising

Every player on the pitch watches for the agreed pressing triggers. The press NEVER starts from one player deciding to chase — it starts from a recognised trigger that everyone has been trained to respond to. The striker (or designated trigger player) is the first to react; their movement is the signal for everyone else.
Player Instructions — 4 roles
Watch the opposition's goalkeeper and nearest centre-back. When the trigger appears (GK receives, back pass, poor touch) — start the press immediately.
Your first step fires the whole press. Do not hesitate.
Watch the striker. When the striker starts pressing, immediately sprint toward the right back to cut off the wide passing option.
If the striker goes, you go. No delay.
Mirror the left winger — immediately cover the left back to block the switch of play.
Kill the wide escape route the moment the trigger fires.
Hold your position and watch which central midfielder the opponent tries to escape to. Be ready to step forward and press when the ball moves to them.
Block the central escape lane — don't rush into the press yet.
One trigger player moves — everyone else responds immediately. Train this until the response is automatic. Use video: freeze the frame at the trigger moment and ask each player 'where should you be going right now?'
All 10 outfield players are moving within 1 second of the trigger firing. No one is standing still.
