First Touch in Soccer
The ability to control the ball instantly on receiving it, setting up the next action.
What is First Touch?
First touch is the foundation of good football. A perfect first touch creates time and space — a poor one gives the ball back to the opponent. Elite players like Luka Modrić and David Silva were renowned for their ability to kill the ball and immediately threaten.
How First Touch Is Used in Matches
First touch is the bridge between receiving and attacking. In tight midfield zones, a poor touch gives opponents time to press; a perfect touch opens the game.
Receiving under pressure
When a midfielder receives between the lines with an opponent close behind, the first touch must shift the ball away from the pressure — often sideways or forward — to avoid being dispossessed.
Turning with the ball
A striker receiving a pass with their back to goal uses the first touch to shift the ball to one side, simultaneously creating space and positioning for a shot or lay-off.
Aerial control
Dealing with long balls or clearances in the air demands a soft, cushioned first touch — letting the ball drop into a controlled position rather than letting it bounce unpredictably.
