1v1 Decision Making for Wingers
This drill focuses on improving a winger's decision-making skills when faced with a stationary defender. Players will practice dribbling techniques and movement to create space while evaluating their options for a successful attack.
Objective
To develop decision-making skills when attacking a defender in a 1v1 situation.
Setup
Set up a 10x10 yard grid with cones. Place one cone in the center to represent the stationary defender, and use additional cones to mark the starting positions for the wingers. You will need at least two players for this drill.
Drill Steps
- 1
Position one player as the winger 5 yards away from the defender cone, and the other player as the defender in the center.
- 2
On the coach's signal, the winger attacks the defender, using skill moves or changes of direction to create space.
- 3
The defender holds their position, providing a realistic challenge for the winger to navigate around.
- 4
After the winger successfully maneuvers around the defender, they can take a shot on goal or pass to a teammate positioned outside the grid.
- 5
Switch roles after 2 minutes, allowing both players to practice as winger and defender.
Coaching Points
- Encourage quick, decisive movements from the winger.
- Remind players to keep their heads up to assess options.
- Focus on using feints and skill moves to beat the defender.
- Emphasize the importance of creating space before making a decision.
Variations
To make it easier, allow the winger to start closer to the defender. For a more challenging variation, introduce a second defender after a successful dribble.
