Attacking Midfielder Connection Drill
This drill focuses on developing the chemistry between attacking midfielders and forwards through quick passing and movement. Players will practice finding space, making runs, and delivering accurate passes to create goal-scoring opportunities.
Objective
To enhance communication and precision in attacking plays between midfielders and forwards.
Setup
Set up a rectangular grid (20x30 yards) with cones marking the corners. Place 4 players in the central area (2 midfielders and 2 forwards) and additional players on the outside as support options. Ensure there is enough space for players to move freely.
Drill Steps
- 1
Begin with the two midfielders in the center passing the ball to each other while the forwards make runs into the spaces created by their movements.
- 2
After a few passes, one midfielder plays the ball to a forward making a diagonal run towards the goal.
- 3
The forward then has the option to shoot or pass to another forward who has made a supporting run.
- 4
Rotate positions after 5 minutes, allowing forwards to become midfielders and vice versa.
- 5
Encourage players to communicate their intentions and use visual cues to signal runs and passes.
- 6
Repeat the drill, adding variations such as limited touches or timed sequences to increase the challenge.
Coaching Points
- Encourage players to maintain eye contact and call for the ball.
- Emphasize the importance of timing in runs and passes.
- Remind players to use both feet for passing.
- Focus on creating space through movement off the ball.
- Reinforce quick decision-making under pressure.
Variations
To make the drill easier, allow players to take more touches before passing. To increase difficulty, introduce a defender in the central area to apply pressure.
