Creating Space for the Shot Drill
This drill focuses on helping strikers learn to create space for themselves before taking a shot. Players will practice movement patterns that allow them to receive the ball in optimal positions for shooting. The drill enhances decision-making and spatial awareness in attacking situations.
Objective
To improve strikers' ability to create space for shots through effective movement.
Setup
Set up a rectangular area (20x30 yards) with cones marking the corners. Position 3 attacking players and 1 defender within this area. Use additional cones to mark shooting zones outside the area.
Drill Steps
- 1
Start with the attacking players positioned at one end of the rectangle, while the defender stands centrally.
- 2
One attacking player receives a pass from outside the area, then moves towards the defender to create space.
- 3
The receiving player should use quick footwork and body positioning to evade the defender and create space.
- 4
Once space is created, the player takes a shot from the designated shooting zone, aiming for the goal.
- 5
Rotate roles after each round so all players get the chance to practice creating space and shooting.
Coaching Points
- Encourage quick, explosive movements to create space.
- Focus on body positioning to shield the defender.
- Emphasize the importance of decision-making: when to shoot versus when to pass.
- Remind players to keep their heads up to assess shooting options.
Variations
To increase difficulty, add a second defender. Alternatively, reduce the size of the area to encourage quicker decision-making.
