Dribble or Pass Decision Drill
This drill focuses on enhancing decision-making for wingers during attacking scenarios. Players will practice choosing between dribbling and passing under pressure, simulating game-like situations.
Objective
To develop quick decision-making skills in 1v1 situations.
Setup
Set up a rectangular area (20x30 yards) with cones marking the corners. Divide players into two teams, with a minimum of four players on each side. Place one player from each team at opposite ends of the rectangle to initiate the drill.
Drill Steps
- 1
One player from Team A starts with the ball at one end of the rectangle and must advance towards the opposite end while facing a defender from Team B.
- 2
As the attacking player approaches, they must quickly decide whether to dribble past the defender or pass to a teammate positioned nearby.
- 3
If they choose to dribble and successfully beat the defender, they can take a shot on goal; if they pass, the receiving player must then attempt to score.
- 4
After each attempt, the players switch roles, allowing defenders to become attackers and vice versa.
- 5
Encourage players to communicate and provide support to each other throughout the drill.
Coaching Points
- Encourage players to assess the defender's position early.
- Remind players to keep their heads up while dribbling.
- Emphasize the importance of timing when making a pass.
- Highlight the need for quick decision-making under pressure.
Variations
To increase difficulty, add a time limit for decisions. For an easier version, reduce the number of defenders or allow more space for dribbling.
