Exploiting the Defender's Weak Side
This drill helps wingers practice exploiting a defender's weak side during 1v1 situations. Players will learn to read the defender's body positioning and make quick decisions to take advantage of the space created.
Objective
To improve decision-making and dribbling skills when attacking a defender's weak side.
Setup
Use a 20x15 meter area with two cones marking the starting points for the attacker and defender. You will need at least two players: one attacker (winger) and one defender. Additional players can rotate in to practice the drill.
Drill Steps
- 1
Begin with the attacker positioned 5 meters away from the defender, who is facing them.
- 2
The attacker will start by dribbling towards the defender, observing their body positioning to identify the weak side.
- 3
Once the attacker identifies the weak side, they will make a quick feint to that side before accelerating past the defender.
- 4
After successfully getting past the defender, the attacker should aim to take a shot on goal or cross the ball into a designated area.
- 5
Rotate roles so that each player has an opportunity to practice both attacking and defending.
- 6
Encourage players to communicate and give feedback on positioning and decision-making.
Coaching Points
- Focus on body positioning of the defender.
- Encourage quick footwork and explosive acceleration.
- Remind players to read the defender's movements.
- Emphasize the importance of timing when making the move.
- Practice both left and right foot dribbling.
Variations
To increase difficulty, add a time limit for the attacker to make their move. To make it easier, allow the attacker to start closer to the defender or reduce the distance.
