Mastering Short and Long Passes
This drill focuses on developing players' passing skills, emphasizing both short and long passes. Players will practice their accuracy and technique while working in pairs, ensuring they can deliver precise passes under varying conditions.
Objective
To improve players' passing accuracy and technique for both short and long distances.
Setup
Set up a rectangular area, about 20 yards long and 10 yards wide, using cones to mark the corners. Position two players at opposite ends of the rectangle. You'll need at least two players for this drill to start.
Drill Steps
- 1
Player A starts by passing the ball to Player B using a short pass, aiming for accuracy within a designated target area (e.g., a cone).
- 2
After receiving the pass, Player B controls the ball, then returns a long pass back to Player A, who must adjust their position to receive the ball.
- 3
Players should alternate roles after every five passes, ensuring both practice short and long passes.
- 4
Introduce an element of movement by having players switch positions after each round of passes to simulate game scenarios.
- 5
Encourage players to communicate by calling for the ball before receiving it, enhancing their awareness on the pitch.
Coaching Points
- Focus on using the correct part of the foot for passing.
- Ensure players follow through on their passes for better accuracy.
- Remind players to keep their heads up to assess their options.
- Encourage proper body positioning when receiving and passing the ball.
Variations
To make the drill harder, increase the distance between players or introduce a defender to apply pressure. To make it easier, decrease the distance or allow players to use both feet.
