Tempo Control 1v1 Drill
This drill focuses on developing a winger's ability to control their tempo when facing a defender. Players will practice slowing down and changing pace to beat their opponent effectively in a 1v1 scenario.
Objective
The main coaching goal is to enhance players' decision-making and ability to control tempo during 1v1 situations.
Setup
Set up a 10x10 yard grid with cones. Divide players into two groups: attackers (wingers) and defenders. Each attacker will face one defender within the grid.
Drill Steps
- 1
Start with the attacker at one end of the grid and the defender positioned in the center.
- 2
On the coach's signal, the attacker approaches the defender at a controlled pace, practicing slowing down to assess options.
- 3
The attacker can then choose to accelerate past the defender or perform a skill move to bypass them.
- 4
After each attempt, players switch roles, allowing both attackers and defenders to practice.
- 5
Encourage players to communicate and give feedback after each round to improve their decision-making.
Coaching Points
- Encourage players to read the defender's body language.
- Remind attackers to slow down before making their move.
- Focus on quick acceleration after a pause.
- Promote creativity in skill moves to beat the defender.
- Instill confidence in making quick decisions.
Variations
Increase the size of the grid to make it easier for attackers or introduce a second defender to increase difficulty.
