Winger Timing Attack Drill
This drill focuses on helping wingers develop their sense of timing when making attacking runs. Players will learn when to make their move to receive the ball in a dangerous position while avoiding offside traps.
Objective
To improve the timing of attacking runs for wingers.
Setup
Set up a 30x20 yard area with cones marking the boundaries. Place two cones about 15 yards apart at the center of the area to represent the defender's position. You will need at least two players: one acting as the winger and another as the passer.
Drill Steps
- 1
The passer starts with the ball at one end of the area and looks to play a pass towards the winger positioned near the cones.
- 2
The winger must observe the defender's position and time their run to receive the ball just as it is played.
- 3
Once the passer plays the ball, the winger should sprint towards the cones, aiming to receive the ball at the optimal moment.
- 4
After receiving the ball, the winger can either take a shot on goal or make a cross into the penalty area.
- 5
Rotate roles after each attempt, allowing each player to practice both passing and receiving.
Coaching Points
- Encourage players to watch the defender's body language.
- Remind players to stay onside until the moment the ball is played.
- Emphasize the importance of explosive acceleration after the pass.
- Instruct players to communicate with each other before the drill starts.
Variations
Add a defender to pressure the winger, or increase the distance between the passer and the winger for a greater challenge.
