False Nine
Updated March 17, 2026· striker
Definition
A striker who drops deep to collect the ball, dragging center-backs out of position.
Tactical Explanation
The false nine subverts every defensive assumption about where the centre-forward will be. By dropping into the pockets between midfield and attack, the false nine creates a vacuum in central areas that overlapping midfielders and wingers exploit.
The opponent's centre-backs face an impossible decision: follow the dropping striker and leave space behind, or hold their line and allow the false nine to receive freely in dangerous zones.
The concept requires a striker with outstanding passing vision and positional intelligence rather than traditional penalty-box instincts.
Real Match Examples
Barcelona (2009-2012) · Lionel Messi
Guardiola deployed Messi as a false nine without a traditional striker, with the resulting space flooded by David Villa and Pedro cutting inside from wide.
Germany (2014 World Cup) · Thomas Müller
Germany used Müller's pressing, movement and ability to drop deep as a pseudo-false nine during their 7-1 semi-final against Brazil.
