La Croqueta Skill Drill
This drill focuses on mastering the La Croqueta maneuver, essential for central midfielders to evade defenders and maintain possession. Players will practice the skill in a controlled environment before applying it in game-like scenarios.
Objective
To develop the ability to execute the La Croqueta under pressure.
Setup
Create a 10x10 yard grid using cones. Divide players into pairs, with one player as the attacker and the other as the defender. Each pair will work within the grid.
Drill Steps
- 1
The attacker starts with the ball at their feet and faces the defender, who is positioned about 3-5 yards away.
- 2
The attacker performs the La Croqueta by shifting the ball quickly from one foot to the other, moving it past the defender.
- 3
Once the ball is moved, the attacker accelerates to retrieve it on the opposite side of the defender.
- 4
After a set time (e.g., 1 minute), players switch roles, allowing both to practice the skill.
- 5
Encourage players to keep their heads up while executing the skill to maintain awareness of their surroundings.
Coaching Points
- Focus on using the inside of both feet for a smooth transition.
- Keep your body low and balanced during the maneuver.
- Encourage quick foot movement and acceleration after the skill.
- Remind players to maintain control of the ball at all times.
- Use visual cues to identify when to perform the La Croqueta effectively.
Variations
To make it easier, increase the distance between the attacker and defender. To make it harder, add a second defender or reduce the grid size.
