Explosive 1v1 Wing Play Drill
This drill focuses on the winger's ability to exploit space and change pace after a defender hesitates. Players will practice quick acceleration and decision-making in a 1v1 scenario, simulating game situations where they need to take on defenders.
Objective
To enhance the winger's ability to explode past a defender after creating an opportunity.
Setup
Create a rectangular area about 15 yards long and 10 yards wide using cones. Position one attacking player (the winger) at one end and a defending player at the opposite end. Ensure there are enough players to rotate positions.
Drill Steps
- 1
Start with the defender standing in the middle of the area while the attacker begins at one end.
- 2
The attacker approaches the defender at a moderate pace, attempting to gauge the defender's reaction.
- 3
Once the defender hesitates or takes a step back, the attacker must explode forward, using speed and skill to bypass the defender.
- 4
The attacker should aim to dribble the ball to the opposite end of the area while the defender tries to regain their position and prevent the attack.
- 5
After each attempt, players switch roles, allowing both the attacker and defender to experience the drill.
Coaching Points
- Encourage quick decision-making when gauging the defender's position.
- Focus on explosive acceleration once the defender hesitates.
- Remind players to keep the ball close while accelerating.
- Emphasize the importance of body feints to deceive the defender.
Variations
To make the drill easier, allow the attacker more space to operate. To increase difficulty, add a second defender or limit the space further.
