Finding Space Between the Lines

This drill focuses on helping attacking midfielders recognize and exploit space between the defensive lines of the opposition. Players will practice positioning, timing, and decision-making to receive the ball effectively and create goal-scoring opportunities.

Objective

To improve players' ability to find and utilize space between defensive lines.

Setup

Set up a rectangular area (20x30 yards) with cones marking the boundaries. Divide players into two teams of 3-4, with one team acting as defenders and the other as attackers. Use additional cones to create two lines to represent the defensive lines.

Drill Steps

  1. 1

Begin with the attacking team trying to receive the ball from a designated player outside the area while the defending team stays within their lines.

  2. 2

The attacking players should move to find space between the defensive lines, making quick decisions on when to receive the ball.

  3. 3

Once a player receives the ball, they must either pass to a teammate or take a shot at goal within a set time limit to encourage quick thinking.

  4. 4

Rotate roles after a few minutes so that each player gets the opportunity to practice both attacking and defending.

Coaching Points

  • Encourage players to scan the field before receiving the ball.
  • Remind them to make quick, decisive movements to create space.
  • Highlight the importance of timing their runs to avoid offside.
  • Focus on communication between players to enhance teamwork.

Variations

Increase the number of defenders to make it more challenging, or reduce the time allowed for attackers to make decisions to enhance pressure.
