Pressure Decision-Making Drill
This drill focuses on enhancing decision-making skills for attacking midfielders when under pressure from defenders. Players will practice receiving the ball, scanning the field, and making quick decisions in tight spaces.
Objective
To develop quick decision-making skills under pressure in attacking situations.
Setup
Set up a 20x20 yard grid using cones. Position two defenders inside the grid and four attackers on the perimeter. Each attacker should have a ball.
Drill Steps
- 1
Each attacker starts with a ball and must enter the grid to pass to a teammate while avoiding the defenders.
- 2
Once a ball is played, the passer must immediately look to receive the ball back from another attacker.
- 3
Defenders aim to intercept the ball and apply pressure, forcing attackers to make fast decisions.
- 4
If a defender wins the ball, they switch roles with the attacker who lost possession.
- 5
Continue the drill for a set time, encouraging attackers to focus on movement, passing, and communication.
Coaching Points
- Encourage players to scan the field before receiving the ball.
- Emphasize quick, accurate passing under pressure.
- Remind players to communicate with teammates for better positioning.
- Focus on maintaining composure and making smart decisions.
- Encourage creativity in finding space and options.
Variations
Add an additional defender to increase pressure or reduce the grid size to make it more challenging.
