Alexis Mac Allister
An intelligent all-round midfielder — press-resistant, tactically flexible and a goal threat from distance and from late runs into the box.
Playing Style Summary
Mac Allister is a cerebral, versatile midfielder who can play as a single pivot, in a double pivot or as an advanced eight, adapting his game to what the team needs. After making his name at Brighton he joined Liverpool in June 2023, and under Arne Slot he became a key part of the midfield that won the 2024-25 Premier League, scoring in the title-clinching 5-1 win over Tottenham and earning a place in the PFA Team of the Year. His combination of press resistance, passing, defensive work and goals — including against Real Madrid in consecutive Champions League seasons — makes him one of the most complete midfielders of his generation.
Defining Traits
Tactical Flexibility
Has played as a number six, an eight and a ten — understanding the positional demands of each and switching between them within a game.
Calm Under Pressure
Receives in tight spaces with his back to goal and uses body feints and a quick touch to escape the press rather than playing backwards.
Shooting From Distance
A clean striker of the ball from outside the box — his first Liverpool goal was a 30-yard strike against Fulham that won Goal of the Month.
Defensive Intelligence
Reads passing lanes, times interceptions and engages in duels; his positioning helps the team regain the ball without needing to sprint everywhere.
Strengths
- Versatility across every central midfield role
- Press resistance and ball retention in tight areas
- Goal threat from long range and from late arrivals
- Reading of the game and anticipation in defence
- Big-match temperament, including decisive goals in the Champions League
Limitations
- Not an explosive athlete — can be outrun in open transitions
- Combative tackling has occasionally led to bookings and early in his Liverpool career a red card
