Aurélien Tchouaméni
A tall, powerful defensive midfielder who screens the back line, wins duels and strikes the ball from distance — capable of dropping into defence.
Playing Style Summary
Tchouaméni is a defensive midfielder who combines physical power, positional discipline and a strong long-range shot. Developed at Bordeaux and Monaco, he joined Real Madrid in June 2022 and has won the Champions League, La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Club World Cup there, while also covering at centre-back when injuries required. For France he scored the opening goal of the 2022 World Cup quarter-final against England and started the final against Argentina. For 2026-27, José Mourinho intends to build his midfield around a double pivot of Tchouaméni and Federico Valverde.
Defining Traits
Screening the Defence
Positions himself between the lines to block passing lanes to the opposition's attackers, protecting his centre-backs.
Duel Strength
Tall and strong, he wins tackles and aerial duels in central midfield and stops counter-attacks early.
Long-Range Shooting
A powerful strike from distance — the type of shot that opened the scoring against England in 2022.
Centre-Back Cover
Can drop into the back line as a centre-back, giving the team flexibility in defence and during build-up.
Strengths
- Positional discipline as a screen for the back line
- Duel and aerial strength in midfield
- Powerful long-range shooting
- Versatility to play centre-back
- Experience of winning the Champions League and La Liga
Limitations
- Not as press-resistant in tight spaces as the most technical pivots
- Progressive passing is solid rather than spectacular
- Can be exposed when asked to cover large spaces alone in transition
