Space Compression

Updated September 25, 2026

Definition

Space compression is the coordinated reduction of space between teammates and opponents to limit passing lanes and force predictable play. Defensively it narrows distances to prevent penetration and channel opponents into low-percentage options; offensively it can draw defenders together to create pockets elsewhere. Effective compression relies on timing, communication and disciplined positioning across units.

Tactical Explanation

This attacking concept is used by teams to create advantages in the final third, unsettle defensive structures, and generate high-quality scoring opportunities through intelligent movement and positioning.
