1v1 Decision Flow Drill for Wingers

This drill focuses on improving a winger's ability to make quick decisions in 1v1 situations against defenders. Players will practice various approaches to take on an opponent while considering the best option to progress the play.

Objective

To develop decision-making skills in 1v1 situations for wingers.

Setup

Set up a rectangular grid measuring 20x10 yards. Place two cones about 5 yards apart at one end for the defender's starting point. You will need 2-4 players: one attacker (winger) and one defender.

Drill Steps

  1. 1

The attacker starts with the ball at one end of the grid while the defender stands at the designated cone.

  2. 2

On the coach's signal, the attacker dribbles towards the defender and must decide whether to take the defender on, pass the ball to a teammate outside the grid, or perform a quick cut back.

  3. 3

If the attacker chooses to take on the defender, they must attempt to dribble past them and reach the opposite end of the grid.

  4. 4

If the attacker passes to a teammate, that player can then enter the grid and become the new attacker against the same defender.

  5. 5

After each attempt, players switch roles to give both the attacker and defender equal practice.

Coaching Points

  • Encourage quick decision-making based on the defender's position.
  • Focus on using fakes and changes of direction to beat the defender.
  • Remind players to keep their heads up to scan the field.
  • Emphasize the importance of timing when making passes.

Variations

Add a time limit for the attacker to make their decision, or increase the number of defenders for a more challenging scenario.
