Accurate Passing Drill

This drill focuses on improving passing accuracy by practicing grip, arm angle, and body mechanics. Players will learn to deliver precise passes over short distances, emulating the mechanics of a quarterback throw. This will help develop their overall passing skills on the pitch.

Objective

To enhance players' passing accuracy and technique.

Setup

Set up a rectangular area of about 10x15 yards on the pitch with cones marking the corners. Players should pair up, standing about 5-10 yards apart. Each pair will need a soccer ball.

Drill Steps

  1. 1

Players start by standing opposite each other within the designated area, with one player holding the ball.

  2. 2

The player with the ball focuses on their grip, ensuring they have a firm but relaxed hold on the ball.

  3. 3

Using their non-dominant foot for balance, the player should position their body at a slight angle towards their target.

  4. 4

The player then uses a smooth arm motion to pass the ball, aiming for their partner's feet, ensuring their follow-through is straight and controlled.

  5. 5

After a few passes, players switch roles to practice both receiving and passing the ball.

  6. 6

Encourage players to give feedback to each other on their grip, angle, and follow-through after each round.

Coaching Points

  • Focus on a firm yet relaxed grip on the ball.
  • Maintain a balanced stance with the non-dominant foot forward.
  • Ensure the arm motion is smooth and follows through towards the target.
  • Keep your eyes on the target to help with accuracy.
  • Communicate with your partner for better coordination.

Variations

To increase difficulty, players can increase the distance between them or add a defender to challenge the passer. Alternatively, players can practice with a smaller target area.
