Creative Decision-Making for Midfielders
This drill focuses on developing an attacking midfielder's ability to make quick decisions under pressure. Players will practice choosing between various creative actions such as passing, dribbling, or shooting based on the situation presented by defenders.
Objective
To improve decision-making skills and creativity in attacking scenarios.
Setup
Set up a 30x30 yard grid with four cones marking the corners. Place two defenders in the grid and the rest of the players as attackers outside the grid. Ensure you have at least four attackers waiting to enter the grid.
Drill Steps
- 1
Start with two defenders positioned inside the grid and four attackers outside the grid.
- 2
One attacker enters the grid at a time while the others observe, aiming to create a goal-scoring opportunity.
- 3
The attacker must assess the position of the defenders and decide whether to pass, dribble, or shoot within 10 seconds.
- 4
Once the attacker makes a decision, they execute the action while the defenders react to try and win the ball.
- 5
Rotate players after each round, allowing each attacker to experience the situation multiple times.
Coaching Points
- Encourage quick decision-making under pressure.
- Emphasize the importance of scanning the field before receiving the ball.
- Highlight the need for creativity in finding solutions.
- Reinforce communication among players during the drill.
Variations
Increase the number of defenders to create more pressure, or reduce the time allowed for attackers to make decisions to enhance urgency.
