Creative Passing and Decision Making Drill
This drill focuses on enhancing the decision-making skills of attacking midfielders through creative passing options. Players will learn to quickly assess their surroundings and choose the best passing options while under pressure.
Objective
Improve decision-making and creative passing under pressure.
Setup
Set up a rectangular area measuring 20x15 yards with cones marking the corners. You will need 4-6 players, including two defenders and the rest as attacking midfielders.
Drill Steps
- 1
Divide players into two groups: attacking midfielders and defenders, positioning the defenders in the middle of the area.
- 2
The attacking midfielders will start with the ball at one end of the rectangle, while the defenders aim to intercept passes.
- 3
On the coach's signal, the attacking midfielders must pass the ball among themselves while avoiding the defenders.
- 4
Midfielders should focus on making quick decisions to create space and find open passing lanes, using creativity in their movement.
- 5
If a defender intercepts the ball, they switch roles with the attacking midfielder who lost possession.
- 6
Continue the drill for a set time, then switch roles to allow all players to practice decision-making.
Coaching Points
- Encourage quick thinking and movement off the ball.
- Remind players to scan the field before receiving the ball.
- Stress the importance of finding creative passing angles.
- Reinforce communication among players to support each other.
- Highlight the need for maintaining possession under pressure.
Variations
To increase difficulty, add a time limit for passes or reduce the size of the playing area. To make it easier, allow more touches for the attacking players.
