Creative Passing in Tight Spaces

This drill focuses on developing decision-making skills and creativity in passing under pressure. Players will practice finding space and making quick, effective passes in tight areas, mimicking game-like situations.

Objective

To improve players' ability to make creative passes under pressure while maintaining possession.

Setup

Create a 15x15 yard grid using cones. Divide players into groups of three, with one player as the passer, one as the receiver, and one as the defender. Rotate roles every few minutes.

Drill Steps

  1. 1

The passer starts with the ball and must find the receiver within the grid while avoiding the defender.

  2. 2

The receiver must move to create space and offer passing options while being closely marked by the defender.

  3. 3

Once the passer successfully delivers a pass to the receiver, they switch roles, allowing the receiver to become the passer.

  4. 4

If the defender intercepts the ball, they become the passer, and the original passer takes their place as the defender.

  5. 5

Encourage players to use different types of passes (e.g., through balls, one-touches) and to communicate with each other.

Coaching Points

  • Encourage quick decision-making under pressure.
  • Remind players to scan the field before receiving the ball.
  • Emphasize the importance of creating angles for passing.
  • Highlight the value of using both feet for passing.
  • Promote effective communication among players.

Variations

To increase difficulty, add a time limit for the passer to make a decision. To make it easier, allow more space in the grid or reduce the number of defenders.
