Cross Reading and Finishing Drill

This drill focuses on helping strikers read the game and anticipate crosses from the wings. Players will learn to recognize cues from their teammates and make quick decisions to finish effectively.

Objective

To improve strikers' ability to read crosses and respond quickly.

Setup

Set up a 30x20 yard area with two cones marking the wings. Position two wingers at the cones with a supply of balls and place one striker in the center of the area. A goalkeeper should be in goal.

Drill Steps

  1. 1

The wingers start with the ball at the cones and look to deliver crosses into the box.

  2. 2

The striker must read the wingers' body language and the positioning of defenders to anticipate when to make their run.

  3. 3

As the cross is delivered, the striker should attack the ball, positioning themselves to receive the cross effectively.

  4. 4

The striker should focus on their first touch and aim to finish with a shot on goal, targeting the corners.

  5. 5

After completing a few repetitions, switch roles so each player gets a chance to cross and finish.

Coaching Points

  • Anticipate the cross based on the wingers' movements.
  • Make your run early to beat the defenders.
  • Focus on your first touch to set up the shot.
  • Aim for accuracy and placement over power.

Variations

Make it easier by allowing more time for the striker to react. Increase difficulty by introducing a defender to challenge the striker during finishing.
