Decisive Finishing Drill
This drill focuses on helping strikers make quick finishing decisions before receiving the ball. Players will practice identifying the best finishing technique based on their position and the scenario created by teammates.
Objective
To enhance decision-making and finishing accuracy under pressure for strikers.
Setup
Set up a small grid (20x20 yards) with two cones marking the goal area. Place two additional cones 10 yards apart to simulate defenders. You will need 4-6 players, including one goalkeeper.
Drill Steps
- 1
Divide players into two groups: strikers and defenders. The strikers will start outside the grid.
- 2
The coach will serve a ball into the grid while calling out a finishing type (e.g., 'curl', 'chip', 'power').
- 3
The strikers must read the situation and decide which finishing technique to use before receiving the ball.
- 4
As the striker approaches the goal, a defender will apply light pressure, forcing the striker to make quick decisions.
- 5
After the shot, players rotate positions to ensure everyone experiences both striking and defending roles.
Coaching Points
- Encourage quick decision-making before the touch.
- Focus on body positioning to set up the shot.
- Remind players to keep their head up to read the situation.
- Emphasize follow-through for better accuracy.
- Encourage players to communicate with the server and defender.
Variations
Introduce a time limit for decision-making or add more defenders to increase pressure on the striker.
