Defender Momentum Exploitation Drill
This drill focuses on teaching wingers how to read and exploit the momentum of defenders during 1v1 situations. Players will practice using feints and quick changes of direction to gain an advantage over the defender.
Objective
To improve the winger's ability to read defender momentum and create space for attacking opportunities.
Setup
Use a 20x30 yard area marked with cones. Place one cone as a starting point for the winger and another about 10 yards away for the defender. You will need at least two players for this drill.
Drill Steps
- 1
The winger starts at the cone with the ball, while the defender stands at the second cone, ready to engage.
- 2
On the coach's signal, the winger dribbles towards the defender, using pace to draw them in.
- 3
As the defender commits, the winger should perform a feint or a quick change of direction to move past them.
- 4
Once the winger successfully bypasses the defender, they should take a shot on goal or deliver a cross into the designated scoring area.
- 5
After the first attempt, switch roles so that the defender becomes the winger and vice versa.
Coaching Points
- Encourage quick foot movement and agile changes of direction.
- Remind players to read the defender’s body language for cues.
- Emphasize the importance of keeping the ball close while dribbling.
- Instruct players to maintain a low center of gravity for better balance.
- Highlight the need for a quick decision to exploit the space created.
Variations
To increase difficulty, introduce a second defender. To make it easier, allow the winger to start further away from the defender.
