Defender Reading Drill for Strikers
This drill focuses on helping strikers read the cues of defenders to make informed decisions before receiving the ball. Players will practice recognizing defender positioning and reacting accordingly to create scoring opportunities.
Objective
To enhance strikers' ability to read defenders and make quick, effective movements.
Setup
Set up a 30x20 yard area with two cones marking the start point for the striker. Place two additional cones to represent the defender's position. You will need 2-3 players: one striker and one to simulate the defender.
Drill Steps
- 1
The striker starts at the designated starting cone while the defender positions themselves between the striker and the goal.
- 2
The coach will call out a cue (e.g., 'left', 'right', or 'stay') that indicates how the defender is positioned.
- 3
Upon hearing the cue, the striker must quickly assess the defender's position and make a decision to either cut towards the goal or away from the defender.
- 4
Once the striker has made their movement, the coach passes the ball to them, and they must shoot or pass based on their position relative to the defender.
- 5
After each attempt, players should switch roles to give both the striker and the defender a chance to practice.
Coaching Points
- Keep your head up to observe the defender's position.
- Make quick, decisive movements based on the cue.
- Focus on the timing of your run to avoid being offside.
- Encourage creativity in how you evade defenders.
Variations
Introduce a second defender to increase complexity or allow the defender to apply pressure once the ball is received.
