Final Pass Timing Drill

This drill focuses on improving the timing of the final pass in attacking situations. Players will practice recognizing the right moment to release the ball to their teammates for a scoring opportunity.

Objective

Enhance the ability to time the final pass effectively in attacking plays.

Setup

Set up a 30x30 yard grid with 4 cones marking the corners. Divide players into two teams of 3-4. One team will start with the ball at one corner, while the other team positions themselves at the opposite corner, ready to receive the pass.

Drill Steps

  1. 1

Begin with the ball at one corner of the grid and have the attacking midfielder look for options to pass.

  2. 2

As the midfielder approaches the corner, call out when to pass based on the timing of the players' movements.

  3. 3

The receiving player should time their run to meet the ball at the edge of the grid, simulating a real-game scenario.

  4. 4

After receiving the ball, the player takes a shot on goal or makes another pass to a teammate positioned inside the grid.

  5. 5

Rotate players after each round, ensuring everyone gets a chance to be the passer and receiver.

Coaching Points

  • Encourage players to keep their heads up to assess options.
  • Stress the importance of timing their runs to meet the pass.
  • Remind players to communicate clearly and use hand signals for timing.
  • Focus on the quality of the pass and proper weight depending on the distance.

Variations

To make it easier, reduce the size of the grid. To make it harder, increase the number of defenders in the grid or add a goalkeeper.
