First Touch Finishing in the Box
This drill focuses on improving a striker's first touch and finishing ability under pressure. Players will practice receiving the ball in various scenarios inside the box and quickly taking a shot on goal. The goal is to enhance decision-making and execution in tight spaces.
Objective
To develop a clean first touch and accurate finishing under pressure.
Setup
Use a 12x12 yard area marked with cones to create the box. Position two defenders inside the box and place a goalkeeper in the net. Have 3-4 attacking players waiting outside the box with a supply of balls.
Drill Steps
- 1
Start with one attacking player outside the box who will pass the ball to a teammate inside the box.
- 2
The receiving player must take a quick first touch away from the defender and towards the goal.
- 3
After the first touch, the player immediately shoots at goal before the defenders can close in.
- 4
Rotate players after each shot, ensuring everyone gets a chance to receive and finish.
- 5
Encourage communication among players to call for the ball and time their runs effectively.
Coaching Points
- Focus on taking a touch that opens up the angle for shooting.
- Encourage quick decision-making to shoot or pass.
- Maintain balance and composure while under pressure.
- Keep the head up to assess the position of the goalkeeper.
Variations
Add more defenders to increase pressure or allow only one touch before shooting to simulate game-like scenarios.
