Nutmeg Mastery Drill

This drill focuses on mastering the nutmeg technique, which involves passing the ball through an opponent's legs while maintaining control. Players will practice body positioning and timing to execute the move effectively in a game scenario.

Objective

To improve players' ability to execute the nutmeg technique under pressure.

Setup

Create a rectangular area of about 10x15 yards using cones. Divide players into pairs, with one player acting as the attacker and the other as the defender. Make sure there is enough space for both players to maneuver.

Drill Steps

  1. 1

Start with the defender standing still in the designated area while the attacker approaches from a few yards away.

  2. 2

As the attacker nears the defender, they should perform a quick feint to one side to deceive the defender.

  3. 3

Execute the nutmeg by pushing the ball through the defender's legs and sprinting around them to regain possession.

  4. 4

Once the attacker successfully nutmegs the defender, switch roles after a set number of attempts, allowing both players to practice the skill.

  5. 5

Encourage players to focus on their body positioning and timing to ensure the nutmeg is effective.

Coaching Points

  • Keep your head up to read the defender's movements.
  • Use a quick change of direction to create space.
  • Make sure to push the ball through with the right amount of force.
  • Follow the ball immediately to regain control.
  • Stay balanced to respond quickly after executing the nutmeg.

Variations

Introduce a time limit for the attacker to complete the nutmeg or add a second defender to increase difficulty.
