One-Two Passing Drill

This drill focuses on practicing one-two combinations between strikers and midfielders to create space and eliminate defenders. Players will learn to time their runs and passes effectively, enhancing their attacking play.

Objective

To improve players' ability to execute one-two passes under pressure.

Setup

Set up a rectangular area about 20 yards long and 10 yards wide using cones. Position one striker at the front, one midfielder at the side, and one defender inside the area. You will need at least 3 players for this drill.

Drill Steps

  1. 1

The midfielder starts by passing the ball to the striker who is positioned just inside the area.

  2. 2

Upon receiving the ball, the striker quickly passes it back to the midfielder and makes a forward run towards the defender.

  3. 3

The midfielder plays a return pass to the striker who should now be moving into space beyond the defender.

  4. 4

The striker receives the return pass and attempts to shoot at goal or continue the play.

  5. 5

After each round, rotate the players so everyone gets a chance at each position.

Coaching Points

  • Encourage quick decision-making and passing.
  • Focus on timing your runs to stay onside.
  • Use proper technique when passing and receiving.
  • Communicate with teammates before and after the pass.
  • Encourage players to be aware of the defender's position.

Variations

To make it harder, add a second defender to increase pressure. To make it easier, allow the striker to receive the ball deeper before executing the one-two.
