Perfecting the Crossing Technique

This drill focuses on teaching players the correct technique for delivering effective crosses into the box. By practicing varied crossing angles and techniques, players will enhance their ability to create scoring opportunities for teammates.

Objective

To improve players' crossing accuracy and technique for increased goal assists.

Setup

Set up a rectangular area of about 30 yards long by 15 yards wide near the edge of the penalty area. Place cones at the corners and along the sides to mark crossing zones. You will need 4-5 players to participate in the drill.

Drill Steps

  1. 1

Position two players at the corners of the designated crossing area and one player at the center of the box to receive the cross.

  2. 2

The player at the corner will begin with the ball and drive towards the end line while maintaining control.

  3. 3

As they approach the end line, they will deliver a cross into the box aimed at the receiving player.

  4. 4

The receiving player will focus on timing their run to meet the ball, using proper heading or volleying technique to attempt a shot on goal.

  5. 5

Rotate positions after a set number of attempts, ensuring all players practice both crossing and receiving.

  6. 6

Encourage players to vary their crossing techniques, such as driven crosses, lofted balls, and cut-back crosses.

Coaching Points

  • Focus on the non-kicking foot placement for balance.
  • Encourage follow-through to ensure accuracy and power.
  • Emphasize eye contact between the crosser and the receiver.
  • Remind players to adjust their timing based on the cross type.
  • Promote communication on the pitch to enhance teamwork.

Variations

To make the drill easier, allow players to cross from a stationary position. To increase difficulty, add a defender who attempts to intercept the cross.
