Pressure Finishing Drill
In this drill, strikers will practice finishing while under defensive pressure. This will help improve their ability to make quick decisions and execute accurate shots in game-like scenarios.
Objective
To enhance strikers' finishing ability under pressure from defenders.
Setup
Set up a 20x15 yard area with two cones marking the goal line and place a small goal or two cones to define the goal area. Position one defender in front of the goal and two strikers outside the area, ready to attack.
Drill Steps
- 1
Begin with two strikers positioned at the edge of the box, each with a ball.
- 2
On the coach's whistle, the strikers will dribble towards the goal while the defender applies pressure.
- 3
As the strikers approach the goal, they must make a quick decision to shoot or pass based on the defender's positioning.
- 4
The strikers take turns shooting while the defender tries to block or disrupt their shot.
- 5
After a set number of attempts, switch roles so that each player has the opportunity to be a striker and a defender.
Coaching Points
- Encourage quick decision-making under pressure.
- Focus on using both feet for shooting accuracy.
- Remind players to keep their heads up to assess options.
- Emphasize the importance of body positioning when shooting.
- Ensure strikers follow through on their shots for better accuracy.
Variations
To increase difficulty, add a second defender or reduce the size of the goal. To make it easier, allow strikers to have a few seconds of unopposed dribbling before the defender engages.
