Quick Step Over Dribble Drill

This drill focuses on mastering the quick step over dribble to enhance players' agility and footwork. Players will learn how to deceive defenders with effective body movements while maintaining control of the ball.

Objective

The main goal is to improve players' dribbling skills and ability to outmaneuver opponents using step overs.

Setup

Set up a rectangular area about 20x10 yards with cones marking the edges. Players will need a ball each and can work in pairs or small groups.

Drill Steps

  1. 1

Begin by dribbling the ball towards the first cone at a moderate pace.

  2. 2

As you approach the cone, perform a quick step over with your dominant foot while shifting your body weight to that side.

  3. 3

Immediately after the step over, push the ball in the opposite direction with your opposite foot, accelerating away from the cone.

  4. 4

Repeat the process towards the next cone, focusing on maintaining control of the ball and your posture.

  5. 5

After a few repetitions, switch directions to practice using both feet in the step over dribble.

Coaching Points

  • Keep your head up to scan for defenders.
  • Use your body to sell the step over.
  • Stay low and balanced during the movement.
  • Accelerate quickly after the step over.
  • Practice using both feet for versatility.

Variations

To make the drill easier, reduce the speed of dribbling. To increase difficulty, add a defender to apply pressure as players perform the step over.
