Reading the Defender's Cues

This drill focuses on helping wingers develop the skill of reading a defender's body language and foot positioning. Players will practice identifying cues to make effective decisions during 1v1 situations.

Objective

To enhance wingers' ability to read defenders and make quick, effective movements.

Setup

Set up a 20x20 yard grid using cones. Divide players into pairs, with one player acting as the attacker (winger) and the other as the defender. Ensure there is enough space for players to move freely.

Drill Steps

  1. 1

The attacker starts with the ball at one end of the grid, while the defender stands a few yards away in a ready position.

  2. 2

The attacker observes the defender's front foot and body shape to gauge which direction the defender is likely to move.

  3. 3

Based on the defender's cues, the attacker performs either a quick feint or a direct move to beat the defender and dribble toward the opposite end of the grid.

  4. 4

After each attempt, players switch roles and repeat the drill, ensuring both the attacker and defender practice reading cues effectively.

  5. 5

Encourage players to discuss what cues they noticed and how they influenced their decisions after each round.

Coaching Points

  • Focus on the defender's front foot position.
  • Encourage quick decision-making based on cues.
  • Remind attackers to keep their heads up while dribbling.
  • Emphasize the importance of body feints and acceleration.

Variations

Increase the size of the grid for more space or add a second defender to increase complexity.
