Set-Piece Creation Drill

This drill focuses on creating scoring opportunities from set pieces. Players will learn to recognize positioning and movement patterns that can lead to effective chances even before the ball is in play.

Objective

To improve players' ability to create chances from set pieces through strategic positioning and communication.

Setup

Use half of the pitch, placing cones to mark the penalty area. Position 3-4 attacking midfielders and 2 defenders. A goalkeeper should be in goal to simulate real match conditions.

Drill Steps

  1. 1

Begin with the attacking midfielders positioned around the penalty area, while the defenders are placed to mark them.

  2. 2

The coach calls out a specific set-piece scenario, such as a corner or free-kick, prompting players to quickly position themselves accordingly.

  3. 3

Once positioned, players should communicate and make dynamic runs to create space, looking for openings in the defense before the ball is delivered.

  4. 4

After 5-10 seconds of movement, the coach signals for the ball to be played in by a designated player, who delivers the set-piece from a corner or free-kick.

  5. 5

Players then execute their pre-planned runs to receive the ball and attempt a shot on goal, focusing on accuracy and decision-making.

Coaching Points

  • Encourage quick communication and decision-making.
  • Emphasize the importance of creating space and timing runs.
  • Remind players to read the defenders' positioning.
  • Focus on the quality of the delivery from the set-piece taker.
  • Reinforce the need for players to be aware of their surroundings.

Variations

To increase difficulty, add more defenders or limit the time for players to set up. To make it easier, allow players more time to position themselves and remove a defender.
