Short and Long Pass Drill

This drill focuses on enhancing players' passing skills through both short and long passes. Players will pair up and practice passing the ball to each other at varying distances, improving their technique and accuracy.

Objective

To develop passing accuracy and technique for both short and long distances.

Setup

Set up a rectangular area measuring 20x30 yards with cones marking the corners. Divide players into pairs, and position them at varying distances within the area to practice their passes.

Drill Steps

  1. 1

Start by having players stand 5 yards apart and pass the ball to each other using short passes, focusing on accuracy and technique.

  2. 2

After 2 minutes, gradually increase the distance between the players to 10 yards and continue practicing short passes.

  3. 3

Next, shift to longer passes by having players move to a distance of 15-20 yards apart, ensuring they use proper technique to maintain accuracy.

  4. 4

Encourage players to use both feet when passing to develop versatility in their passing skills.

  5. 5

Finally, introduce movement by having players pass the ball while jogging towards each other, simulating game situations.

Coaching Points

  • Keep your head up to scan the field before passing.
  • Use the inside of your foot for accuracy on short passes.
  • Follow through on long passes for better distance.
  • Ensure a solid first touch to set up the pass.
  • Communicate with your partner to ensure timing and movement.

Variations

To make the drill easier, reduce the distance for long passes. To make it harder, introduce a defender who pressures the passer.
