Space Recognition and Quick Decision Making
This drill focuses on helping attacking midfielders recognize space and make quick decisions under pressure. Players will practice identifying open areas and executing passes or dribbles efficiently to exploit those spaces.
Objective
To enhance players' ability to read the game and act quickly in attacking scenarios.
Setup
Set up a rectangular area of about 30x20 yards with cones marking the corners. You'll need at least 4 players: 2 defenders and 2 attacking midfielders. The defenders will work on closing down space while the midfielders will focus on recognizing opportunities to exploit.
Drill Steps

Start with the two attacking midfielders positioned at opposite ends of the rectangle and the defenders in the middle.

The attacking midfielders will attempt to receive the ball from a coach or another player outside the rectangle, while the defenders will close in to apply pressure.

As soon as the midfielders receive the ball, they must quickly assess the space around them and decide whether to pass, dribble, or shield the ball.

If a midfielder successfully makes a pass to the opposite end without losing possession, they switch places with the defender who was closest to them.

After a set time, rotate roles so all players experience both attacking and defending positions.
Coaching Points
- Encourage quick scanning of the field before receiving the ball.
- Emphasize the importance of body positioning to shield the ball.
- Remind players to communicate with teammates for better spatial awareness.
- Highlight the need for quick decision-making under pressure.
Variations
To make the drill harder, reduce the size of the playing area or increase the number of defenders. To make it easier, allow midfielders to receive the ball from a stationary position without defenders initially.
