Step-Over Dribble Challenge
This drill focuses on practicing the step-over dribbling technique, allowing players to effectively maneuver around defenders. By utilizing this skill, players can improve their agility and ball control while becoming more unpredictable in their movements.
Objective
To develop the ability to perform step-overs effectively while maintaining control of the ball.
Setup
Set up a 15x15 yard grid using cones. Place two cones 5 yards apart in the middle of the grid. You will need at least two players, one as the attacker and the other as the defender.
Drill Steps
- 1
Start by dribbling the ball towards the two cones in the center of the grid.
- 2
As you approach the cones, perform a step-over by swinging your dominant foot over the ball while shifting your body weight to that side.
- 3
Use your other foot to push the ball in the opposite direction, away from the defender.
- 4
Accelerate past the defender after completing the step-over and maintain control of the ball.
- 5
Switch roles with your partner after a set number of repetitions, allowing both players to practice the technique.
Coaching Points
- Keep your head up to read the defender's movement.
- Use your body to fake out the defender effectively.
- Focus on quick, explosive movements to maintain speed.
- Practice with both feet to become more versatile.
- Encourage communication between players during the drill.
Variations
To increase difficulty, add a time limit for the attacker to get past the defender. For beginners, allow more space between the cones or reduce the number of defenders.
