Step-Over Dribble Challenge
This drill focuses on practicing the step-over dribble move to enhance players' ability to beat defenders. Players will learn to execute the step-over with precision and incorporate it into their dribbling during game scenarios.
Objective
To improve players' dribbling skills using the step-over move.
Setup
Set up a 20x30 yard grid with cones marking the corners. Place two defenders in the middle of the grid and the rest of the players on one end. You'll need at least four players: two attackers and two defenders.
Drill Steps
- 1
Players start at one end of the grid and approach the defenders with the ball at their feet.
- 2
As they get closer, they perform a step-over move by stepping over the ball with one foot while pushing the ball slightly forward with the other foot.
- 3
The player then accelerates past the defender, using the momentum from the step-over to change direction quickly.
- 4
If the defender successfully stops the attacker, they switch roles, and the next attacker takes their turn.
- 5
Encourage players to vary their speed and timing to keep defenders guessing.
Coaching Points
- Keep your head up to read the defender's movement.
- Use quick footwork to execute the step-over effectively.
- Accelerate immediately after the step-over to create space.
- Practice both right and left foot step-overs to become versatile.
Variations
Add more defenders to increase difficulty or allow players to use different dribbling techniques after the step-over.
