Step-Over Dribble Mastery Drill
This drill focuses on practicing the step-over dribble to improve players' ability to evade defenders. Players will learn the footwork and body movements necessary to execute the move effectively in game situations.
Objective
To develop players' confidence and technique in performing the step-over dribble.
Setup
Set up a 10x10 yard grid using cones. Place two cones in the center about 5 yards apart to act as defenders. Divide players into groups of three: one attacker and two defenders.
Drill Steps
- 1
The attacker starts at one end of the grid and approaches the two cones positioned as defenders.
- 2
As the attacker nears the cones, they perform a step-over move with one foot to simulate faking out the defenders.
- 3
After the step-over, the attacker accelerates past the defenders while maintaining control of the ball.
- 4
The defenders should try to close down the attacker without making physical contact, focusing on positioning.
- 5
After each attempt, players rotate roles, giving everyone a chance to practice both attacking and defending.
Coaching Points
- Use quick foot movements for effective step-overs.
- Keep your head up to maintain awareness of your surroundings.
- Accelerate immediately after the step-over to exploit space.
- Practice using both feet for the step-over move.
Variations
Increase the distance between the defenders for more challenge or allow the attacker to use any dribbling move after the step-over.
