Step-Over Dribble Mastery
This drill focuses on mastering the step-over dribble, a key technique for creating space and beating defenders. Players will practice the step-over move in a controlled environment, enhancing their agility and confidence in one-on-one situations.
Objective
To improve players' ability to execute the step-over dribble effectively against defenders.
Setup
Set up a small grid (10x10 yards) using cones. Place two cones at opposite ends to represent defenders. Players will practice the step-over dribble in pairs, with one acting as the attacker and the other as the defender.
Drill Steps
- 1
Start with the attacker dribbling towards the defender at a moderate pace.
- 2
As the attacker approaches the defender, they perform a step-over by swinging one foot over the ball while shifting their body weight to the opposite side.
- 3
Quickly push the ball with the opposite foot in the direction they want to go, using speed to evade the defender.
- 4
The defender should react to the step-over, attempting to block the attackerâs path while maintaining a safe distance.
- 5
After a set number of attempts, switch roles so both players can practice the step-over dribble.
Coaching Points
- Keep your head up to read the defender's position.
- Use a quick and decisive movement for the step-over.
- Ensure body weight shifts to create space for the next move.
- Practice both left and right step-overs for balance.
Variations
To increase difficulty, reduce the size of the grid or add a time limit for the attacker. For beginners, allow players to perform the step-over without a defender initially.
