Step-Over Mastery Drill

This drill focuses on practicing the step-over move to enhance footwork and improve attacking skills. Players will learn to effectively use the step-over to deceive defenders and create space for attacking plays.

Objective

To develop the ability to perform step-overs effectively in game situations.

Setup

Set up a 10x10 yard square using cones. Divide players into pairs, with one player acting as the attacker and the other as the defender. Ensure players have adequate space to practice the move without obstruction.

Drill Steps

  1. 1

The attacker starts at the edge of the square, facing the defender who stands inside the square.

  2. 2

The attacker approaches the defender with the ball, maintaining close control.

  3. 3

As the attacker reaches the defender, they perform a step-over by planting one foot over the ball while shifting their weight to the opposite foot.

  4. 4

The attacker then pushes the ball in the direction they want to go, using their outer foot to accelerate past the defender.

  5. 5

After executing the move, the attacker should continue to dribble away from the defender and finish with a shot on goal or a pass to a teammate.

Coaching Points

  • Keep your body low and balanced during the step-over.
  • Ensure the step-over is exaggerated to confuse the defender.
  • Use the non-dominant foot to sell the move effectively.
  • Practice both left and right step-overs for versatility.
  • Encourage quick acceleration after the move to exploit space.

Variations

To make the drill easier, allow the attacker to practice without a defender. To increase difficulty, add a time limit for the attacker to perform the step-over and finish.
