Through Ball Precision Drill
This drill focuses on the technique and precision required for executing effective through balls. Players will practice passing to a moving target, emphasizing timing and placement to break defensive lines.
Objective
Develop accuracy and timing in executing through balls to support attacking play.
Setup
Set up a rectangular area (20x30 yards) with two cones at the opposite ends to represent the target area. Place additional cones at the center of the rectangle for players to pass from. You will need 4-6 players for this drill.
Drill Steps
- 1
Position two players at each end of the rectangular area, with additional players positioned at the center cones.
- 2
The player at the starting cone will receive the ball from a central player and then look to execute a through ball towards a teammate at the opposite end.
- 3
Encourage the player receiving the through ball to make a diagonal run towards the side of the area to simulate breaking through a defense.
- 4
After passing, the player should follow their pass to the target area to receive a return ball and then switch roles with another player.
- 5
Rotate players through the positions to ensure everyone practices both passing and receiving.
Coaching Points
- Focus on the weight of the pass.
- Aim for the space behind defenders.
- Encourage players to read the movement of the receiver.
- Emphasize using the inside of the foot for better accuracy.
- Remind players to follow their pass and anticipate the return.
Variations
To make the drill easier, reduce the distance between players. To increase difficulty, add a defender to apply pressure on the receiver.
