Touchline 1v1 Challenge

In this drill, players engage in 1v1 challenges near the touchline to enhance their dribbling, shielding, and attacking skills. The focus is on using the touchline to limit space for defenders while maximizing attacking opportunities for wingers.

Objective

To improve 1v1 attacking skills and decision-making near the touchline.

Setup

Create a narrow playing area about 10 meters wide and 15 meters long, marked with cones. Position two players at opposite ends of the area, with one acting as the attacker and the other as the defender.

Drill Steps

  1. 1

The attacker starts with the ball at one end of the marked area, while the defender stands a few meters away, ready to challenge.

  2. 2

On the coach's signal, the attacker dribbles towards the defender, aiming to get past them and reach the opposite end.

  3. 3

The defender's goal is to prevent the attacker from getting by while staying within the touchline boundaries.

  4. 4

If the attacker successfully dribbles past the defender, they score by crossing the end line; if the defender wins the ball, they switch roles.

  5. 5

After a set time (e.g., 1 minute), players rotate positions to ensure both get equal practice.

Coaching Points

  • Encourage quick footwork and decisive movements.
  • Use the touchline as a tactical advantage.
  • Focus on body positioning to shield the ball.
  • Maintain control while accelerating past the defender.
  • Practice different dribbling techniques to beat the defender.

Variations

To make it easier, allow the attacker a head start or give them extra touches. To make it harder, reduce the space or add a second defender.
