Vision & Scanning for Midfielders
This drill focuses on enhancing the vision and scanning abilities of attacking midfielders. Players will learn to read the game by anticipating plays and adjusting their positioning before receiving the ball.
Objective
To develop players' ability to scan the field and make informed decisions before receiving the ball.
Setup
Set up a rectangular area approximately 20x30 yards with cones marking the corners. Divide players into two teams of 3-4, with one team acting as the attacking midfielders and the other as defenders. Use additional cones to create zones where defenders must stay.
Drill Steps
- 1
Start with the attacking midfielders positioned in their zone, facing the defenders who are spread out in their designated area.
- 2
The coach will randomly pass the ball to one of the attacking midfielders, who must scan the field before receiving the ball.
- 3
Upon receiving the ball, the midfielder must quickly assess the positions of both teammates and defenders to decide whether to pass, dribble, or shoot.
- 4
After each play, the coach provides feedback on the midfielder's scanning and decision-making process.
- 5
Rotate roles after a set time, allowing defenders to become midfielders and vice versa.
Coaching Points
- Encourage players to constantly scan the field even before receiving the ball.
- Remind midfielders to communicate with teammates for better positioning.
- Focus on making quick decisions based on the current game situation.
- Emphasize the importance of head-up play to maintain awareness.
Variations
To increase difficulty, limit the number of touches allowed for the midfielder. Alternatively, allow defenders to move freely within their zone to create more dynamic scenarios.
