Winger Decision-Making Drill

This drill focuses on helping wingers develop their decision-making skills when facing an early stepping defender. Players will practice dribbling, faking, and selecting the right move to get past the defender while maintaining control of the ball.

Objective

To enhance wingers' ability to read defenders and make quick decisions.

Setup

Set up a 20x25 yard area with two cones as the starting point for the winger and one cone 10 yards away as the defender's position. You will need at least two players: one winger and one defender.

Drill Steps

  1. 1

The winger starts with the ball at the first cone and faces the defender positioned at the second cone.

  2. 2

On the coach's signal, the defender steps forward to pressure the winger, simulating an early challenge.

  3. 3

The winger must assess the defender's position and decide whether to dribble past, fake, or pass the ball.

  4. 4

If the winger chooses to dribble, they should use quick footwork to evade the defender and accelerate towards the end of the area.

  5. 5

After each attempt, players switch roles to allow both the winger and defender to practice their skills.

Coaching Points

  • Encourage quick decision-making based on the defender's movements.
  • Focus on using fakes and changes of pace to create space.
  • Remind players to keep their heads up to assess options.
  • Emphasize maintaining close control while dribbling.

Variations

Introduce a second defender to increase pressure or allow the winger to have a limited number of touches to encourage quicker decisions.
