Morgan Rogers
A powerful ball-carrying number ten — strength to hold off markers, acceleration to break lines and a shot from distance that punishes deep blocks.
Playing Style Summary
Rogers is a physically imposing attacking midfielder who progresses the ball by carrying it — receiving between the lines, rolling his marker and driving at the back line with long, powerful strides. He broke through at Aston Villa after joining from Middlesbrough in February 2024, scoring a Champions League hat-trick against Celtic and the third goal in Villa's 3-0 Europa League final win over Freiburg in May 2026. In July 2026 he moved to Chelsea for a reported £117 million, a British record fee. He can play as a number ten, from the left or as a second striker, and his blend of power and close control makes him very hard to dispossess.
Defining Traits
Line-Breaking Carries
Rogers turns half-chances to progress into real advances: he receives on the half-turn and drives through the gap between midfield and defence, dragging defenders out of shape.
Physical Shielding
Tall and strong, he uses his body to protect the ball with his back to goal, drawing fouls and giving his team a reliable outlet under pressure.
Threat From Distance
Comfortable shooting from the edge of the box with either side of his foot, which forces centre-backs to step out to him and opens space behind.
Positional Flexibility
Interchanges between the number ten, the left side and a second-striker role, which makes him hard for opponents to man-mark.
Strengths
- Explosive ball-carrying through the centre and the left half-space
- Strength and balance to hold off markers and win fouls
- Long-range shooting that punishes passive defences
- Willingness to run beyond the striker into the box
- Versatility across several attacking roles
Limitations
- Final-ball decision-making can be inconsistent after long carries
- Can over-dribble into congested central areas
- Defensive work rate in a structured press is still developing
