1-2 Combination Drill for Midfielders
This drill focuses on practicing 1-2 combinations to enhance midfielders' ability to create space and advance the ball. Players will work on quick passing and movement to develop their decision-making skills in tight situations.
Objective
To improve players' ability to execute 1-2 combinations under pressure.
Setup
Set up a 20x20 yard grid with cones marking the corners. You will need 4-6 players, with 2 players acting as passers and 2-4 players making runs to receive the ball.
Drill Steps
- 1
Begin with two players positioned at opposite cones, acting as the initial passers.
- 2
One of the passers plays a short pass to a teammate standing near the cone, who then returns the ball immediately for a 1-2 combination.
- 3
Upon receiving the return pass, the player making the run should quickly move towards the opposite cone while looking for the next available player to pass to.
- 4
The receiving player can either continue the sequence by passing back or dribbling to the next cone, depending on the coach's directive.
- 5
After a set number of repetitions, switch roles so that all players get the opportunity to practice both passing and receiving.
Coaching Points
- Encourage quick decision-making to maintain the flow of play.
- Focus on accurate passing and timing of runs for effective combinations.
- Remind players to keep their heads up to scan for options before receiving the ball.
- Stress the importance of communication between players during the drill.
Variations
To increase difficulty, add a defender to apply pressure during the combinations. For an easier variation, allow more time for players to execute the passes without pressure.
