Back to Goal Decision Making Drill

This drill focuses on strikers receiving the ball with their back to the goal, emphasizing decision-making under pressure. Players will practice turning, shielding, and distributing the ball effectively to create scoring opportunities.

Objective

To improve players' ability to make quick decisions while receiving the ball under pressure.

Setup

Set up a 20x20 yard grid with cones marking the corners. Position two defenders inside the grid and have two attacking players start at opposite ends. A coach or another player will stand outside the grid to provide the ball.

Drill Steps

  1. 1

The coach passes the ball to one of the attacking players who must receive it with their back to the goal.

  2. 2

The player must quickly assess the positioning of defenders and decide whether to turn, shield, or pass the ball.

  3. 3

If the player chooses to turn, they should execute a quick turn using the inside or outside of their foot to face the goal.

  4. 4

If choosing to shield, the player should use their body to protect the ball from the defender while looking for options to pass.

  5. 5

After making a decision, the player should attempt to create a scoring opportunity by either shooting or passing to a teammate.

Coaching Points

  • Encourage quick thinking and awareness of surroundings.
  • Focus on using body positioning to shield the ball effectively.
  • Remind players to communicate with teammates for support.
  • Highlight the importance of keeping the ball close when turning.
  • Instill confidence in making decisions under pressure.

Variations

To make it easier, allow the attacking players more time to receive the ball. To increase difficulty, add a time limit for decision-making or increase the number of defenders.
